What to Expect at a NJ Cannabis Dispensary

The New Jersey cannabis market is fairly new, making recreational dispensaries the talk of the town. As new consumers indulge their curiosity and past consumers move past their legacy experiences, it’s more important than ever to reset expectations.

Many seem to expect a liquor-store-like shopping experience. However, a legal and licensed New Jersey cannabis dispensary is going to be required to do things a little differently.

No matter what level of experience you already have with the plant, we’re here to help you understand what to expect when you’re visiting a retailer like Plantabis.

Getting There

The recreational dispensaries in New Jersey are located all over the Garden State. From major cities to smaller suburbs, you can find a store near you.

Plantabis is located in southern Union County in Rahway, NJ. We pride ourselves on an accessible location that is right off US-1 (opposite the Merck Athletic Field)

This makes our dispensary location easy to get to. We are also located just one mile from the Rahway Train Station and the Main St at Bridge St bus stop, making it easily accessible for those who prefer eco-friendly commuting options.

Better yet, we have a drive-thru option for those looking to pick up their items without ever stepping outside – something that is not widely available across the United States.

Additionally, with ample parking facilities, we can ensure hassle-free arrivals for our customers.

This central location not only caters to local residents but also welcomes visitors from surrounding areas.

You can visit us in Rahway for in-store or drive-thru shopping Mondays through Saturdays from 9AM to 10PM and Sundays from 11AM to 7PM. You’ll still need to bring your ID and cash (or debit), so be sure to come prepared!

Entering the Dispensary

When visiting a New Jersey dispensary, it’s important to be aware of the required security measures in place that help ensure a safe and compliant environment.

To enter, you must meet state-mandated age requirements, which require that recreational customers be at least 21 years old, and provide valid government-issued identification, such as a driver’s license or passport. Medical cannabis patients have additional documentation requirements (their medical marijuana card).

When you first enter, you can expect to show your ID to a member of the security team who will take a look at your date of birth and scan your ID to ensure validity. In general, you can expect to see a higher level of security in the store than you might see in, say, a liquor store. This includes surveillance systems, access control, and on-site security personnel, all of which are standard features in a dispensary.

These measures are specifically designed to safeguard not only you as the customer but also the dedicated staff working within the facility. By maintaining a secure and controlled environment, dispensaries in New Jersey aim to uphold the integrity of our operations, comply with state regulations, and foster a sense of confidence and well-being among patrons, ensuring a positive and worry-free experience for all.

Selecting Products

Once you’re let inside the dispensary floor, you’ll notice that not all products are displayed on shelves. Instead, empty packaging is set up around the space to represent some of the brands and products available in-store.

This allows you to learn a little bit about the brands in inventory and even get a sense of how many items you may want to purchase. However, you cannot pick these up for checkout.

Instead, you’ll wait in line until a budtender – or member of the retail staff – is available to help you. With them, you can discuss different strains, edibles, concentrates, and accessories and ultimately decide which products you want to purchase.

Most dispensaries in New Jersey will also provide an iPad or desktop menu available for immediate browsing so you can look up products and read more about them while the budtender is recommending them to you.

Of course, no two dispensaries are the same. So, you may encounter different store layouts and approaches to the shopping experience. At Plantabis, we aim to separate ourselves from the cookie-cutter standard you see in the market.

Talking to Budtenders

Much like an upscale boutique, you’ll have the opportunity for a personalized consultation with our knowledgeable budtenders. Here, you can freely discuss your preferences, seek answers to your inquiries, and receive tailored product suggestions tailored to your specific requirements.

Our dedicated team has extensive expertise in our inventory, ensuring you have access to the finest cannabis products in the state, all while gaining valuable insights into how cannabis can seamlessly integrate into your unique lifestyle.

Paying for Cannabis

Dispensaries typically accept various payment methods, including cash, debit cards, and third-party applications. However, it’s essential to be aware of potential limitations, as federal regulations can hinder credit card payments in some instances.

In other words, cash is the most reliable option for cannabis customers in New Jersey, especially as the market remains so new. When it comes to pricing, cannabis products in NJ are subject to pricing structures that can vary depending on factors such as product type, quality, and local market conditions.

From flower and edibles to concentrates and tinctures, each has a different price point. Prices can also be influenced by factors like brand recognition and potency, so it’s crucial to inquire about the cost of specific items during your visit.

Taxes also play a significant role in the final cost of cannabis products. In New Jersey, cannabis purchases are subject to state sales tax (6.63%) as well as a cannabis-specific tax which is imposed by the local governing body (+2% in Rahway).

These taxes can impact the overall cost of cannabis, so it’s wise to factor them into your budget when planning a dispensary visit.
